HKUST Receives a Bronze Award of the "2017 HKAEE for the Public Services"
Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE) Scheme was launched in 2008 to recognize the efforts in green management and innovation for environmental protection in 11 industries. To establish benchmarks for environmental excellence, this program has been widely recognized by the community as one of the most prestigious and reputable environmental award schemes in Hong Kong.
Over the years, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has alway committed to fostering a green environment and has been awarded for our excellent environmental performance and leadership. Sustainable targets and policies have been established. The University has started to put the “HKUST 2020 Sustainability Challenge” strategy into action, which includes achieving goals of reducing 10% of greenhouse gas emissions and 50% of landfill waste by 2020. The University has made good progress in the implementation.
This year, the University received the Bronze Award of the "2017 HKAEE for the Public Services Sector" at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on 4 May 2018.
Here are the green achievement highlights for our award:
- Remodeling the central chiller plant to a district cooling system for supplying chilled water to a new detached laboratory building to meet the new energy demand while reducing the consumption of energy.
- Organising recycling activities such as Electronic Waste Recycling Day, Hall Check Out Recycling Campaign and O’Camp Surplus Material Recycling Programme to educate students on resources saving.
- Forming the Sustainability Network Green Team with over 100 students, staff and other residents of the campus community and inviting them to participate in various environmental activities and hands-on study projects such as survey on the use of reusable containers.
