Road Safety Awareness for Drivers and Pedestrians
Most of the traffic accidents on road are caused by careless driving bringing about property damage, physical injury to driver, passengers and other road users.
Accidents may lead to injuries, loss of money and even lives! Most of the traffic accidents on road are caused by careless driving bringing about property damage, physical injury to driver, passengers and other road users. According to “Road Traffic Casualties by Age and Class of Road User (2006-2016)” published by the Transport Department of HKSAR, drivers were the most vulnerable road users recording the highest number of casualties in traffic accidents.

Safety Tips for Drivers

Get prepared for your driving by taking a good rest. Do not drive when feeling fatigued or ill.
- Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has regular maintenance.
- Drive attentively and avoid distractions.
- Avoid taking drugs or drinking alcoholic beverages before driving.
- Avoid holding mobile phone in hand while driving.
- Do not use tablet computers for reading, watching videos, or mobile applications, etc., while driving.
- Do not wear earphones or turn the volume of car audio too high while driving.
- Avoid having a vigorous conversation or argument with passengers while driving.
- Pay attention to the warning given by horns of other vehicles.
- Observe the traffic condition before changing lane; do so only when safe.
- Observe and obey speed limits; match speed of the traffic flow.
- Do not overtake unless it is safe to do so.
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Follow the “2-second rule”.

Use indicator lights to indicate your intented movement. Observe other traffic both behind and ahead of you while maneuvering your car.

Look out for pedestrian who may cross the road suddenly.
Many traffic accidents involve pedestrians. To reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents, it is important to stay alert of the traffic conditions and comply with traffic rules. Remember, in Hong Kong, cars have the right of way.
Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Use pedestrian crossing facilities such as footbridges, subways, pedestrian traffic lights or zebra crossings.

Always pay attention to road traffic conditions, and pedestrian light signals and avoid being distracted when crossing or walking,

Allow sufficient time for drivers to slow down and stop their vehicles before entering the zebra crossing.

Must not cross the road when the “Red Man” signal is on.

Do not cross the road through the gap between stationary vehicles.

Avoid using mobile phone, portable electronic devices and handheld game console, or listening to music when crossing the road.

Take care of children when crossing the road.
