HSEO (GZ) Multi-Functional Health and Safety Practical Training Centre and Central Dangerous Goods Store

In line with our vision of keeping HSEO to continue to provide leadership in the promotion of health, safety and environmental protection culture and awareness, both in Hong Kong and in China, a “Laboratory Health and Safety Practical Training Centre 實驗室健康與安全實訓中心” will be established on Guangzhou campus. This facility serves to provide a more effective means to organize hands-on safety demonstration/ practical training for laboratory researchers and postgraduate students. We hope that this facility can also become a demonstration center (示範中心) on best laboratory safety practices for other local universities in Mainland China. Besides practical training and safety demonstration, this facility also serves as a work area for HSEO (GZ) to prepare for environmental and occupational field samples, carry out chemical waste compatibility test, conduct respirator fit-testing and other routine activities.

This multi-functional facility is an area of 170m²consisting of two rooms. Its layout, equipment and provision are designed for chemical safety, biological safety, general safety, industrial hygiene, personal protective equipment and emergency response training and demonstration. It is designed to host two groups of about 25 people totally at the same time. Standard laboratory hazard control equipment including chemical fume hood, biosafety cabinet, autoclave, etc. and various types of personal protective equipment will be available for demonstration/ practice for their safe operation and proper use. Open floor space is also designed for group demonstration/ practice for activities such as hazardous materials spill cleanup procedures, proper use of fire-fighting equipment, emergency eyewash and shower, and laboratory emergency ventilation system. The facility will also be equipped with audio-visual system to facilitate the on-site demonstration and display of training videos.

HSEO (GZ) continues to play a role in the central management of the hazardous materials on Guangzhou campus, from acquisition to disposal. In the laboratory building, there will be various storage rooms or temporary holding rooms for statutory controlled materials, highly toxic chemicals, gas cylinders, and cryogenic gases. On every alternate floor in the wet laboratory building, there will also be a hazardous waste store. A central dangerous goods store which is a featured semi-circular shaped design store with ten compartments has also been built for hazardous materials storage such as flammable chemicals, corrosive chemicals, gas cylinders and other supporting facilities.
