Campus Health and Safety
Introducing Two New Senior Staff of HSEO
We have recently recruited Ms. Christine Chiu as our new Associate Director of HSEO. Christine is a seasoned EHS professional serving universities and research institutions. She is not a stranger to the colleagues in HKUST as she was one of our earliest members in HSEO. After receiving a long-service award at UST, Christine ventured to PolyU Health Safety and Environment Office in 2017. Briefly served in PolyU, Christine was head-hunted to the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) as the Director of the Safety, Health and Environment Office. She managed an office of three teams, Laboratory Services, Laboratory and Research Safety, and Campus Safety. Under her leadership, the SHE Office was involved in the InnoHK initiative of the Hong Kong Government to establish 28 world-class university research centers in the Science Park. "Returning to HKUST someday" had always been in her mind and we were pleased to have her re-join our office in September 2022, after a keen selection. Her valuable experience in the top-notch scientific research environment will help lead HSEO to the next milestone. Christine will be the second in command of HSEO, and in charge of occupational hygiene, regulatory compliance, and take lead in reinforcing our research safety programs. Christine is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Registered Biological Safety Professional.
Dr Angie Tang joined us in March 2022. Angie obtained her MPhil and PhD at CUHK, and she has also earned a master’s degree in Occupational Hygiene from Greenwich University. Her doctoral research focused on identification of tumour suppressor gene in gastric cancer. After graduation, she was put in-charge of the Centralized Animal Facility at PolyU for 5 years, providing essential support and inputs to various animal research activities. At the same time, she equipped herself with knowledge and experience in different types of research laboratories. Later, she joined the Health, Safety and Environment Office of PolyU for another 5 years, and established herself as an EHS professional specializing in laboratory and research safety. Before coming to UST, she founded and lead a Laboratory Safety Unit of 12 staff in CityU for 2 years. Angie is now our Senior Manager in-charge of biological safety, including support to Laboratory Animal Facility. She is also overseeing the services of the Campus Medical Clinic and Student Dental Clinic, and is currently our lead person in COVID-19 pandemic response. Angie is a Certified Industrial Hygienist, a Certified Safety Professional and a Registered Biological Safety Professional.
We are sure our two new senior staff will have your full support in implementing various campus health and safety programs. Please feel free to contact them if you have any enquiries in their respective areas. Thank you!
