To avoid the risk of environment pollution arising from battery disposal, it is essential to recover rechargeable batteries and recycle them in an environmentally friendly manner.  In view of this, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) together with manufacturers/importers of rechargeable battery and electronic equipment have jointly launched a community-wide Rechargeable Battery Recycling Programme since 2005.

A rechargeable battery collection box has been placed at the recycling waste collection point at The Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium. The box receives rechargeable batteries including Li-ion, Li polymer, NiMH and NiCd, but does not cover lead acid batteries.

Recently, there are many portable chargers (power banks) for mobile phones in the market. These are driven by rechargeable batteries, and the EPD has confirmed that unwanted portable chargers can also be collected and recycled through the same channel as rechargeable batteries.

For safety reason, measures must be taken to prevent contact between terminals or other metal surfaces during storage and transport. You can place a piece of non-conductive electrical tape or masking tape over the terminals of an unwanted rechargeable battery or portable charger, or put it in a plastic bag and seal it with adhesive tape before depositing it into the collection box.

For more details about the Government's Rechargeable Battery Recycling Programme, please refer to this website.

If you are living off campus, you can check to see if your residential building is in the programme participation list via this link. You may then deposit the battery or charger in collection boxes located in your building, or check with the property management office about collection arrangement.

You can also bring your portable battery charger to one of the nearby public collection points for recycling. Details of the collection points by regions can be found at this link.

Let’s all do our part in recycling rechargeable batteries and portable chargers!
